The Migration Assistant is a tool aimed at ensuring a smooth, swift, and secure migration of your website using a backup ZIP file. We have transitioned to this advanced and more comfortable migration process to streamline efficiency and convenience.
In the case that the automatic migration of your website has failed, you will be guided by our Migration Assistant to migrate your website using a backup zip file.
Automatic migration failure
Upon the failure of automatic migration, the Migration assistant will pop up and you will see the following warning: “ Something on your website is preventing automated migration.” You will be prompted to migrate your website using a backup zip file of your website.
To make a zip file of your website for migration, you will need to export your website's wp-content folder and the database sql file onto your desktop, make a zip file, then upload the zip file to 10Web. Below are the detailed instructions of this process.
How to export your wp-content folder
To export your website data, you will need to connect to your website files and folders.
- Log into your hosting provider account
- Connect to your website files via your choice of protocol to get started
For example purposes, we will use an FTP client to export the wp-content folder.
Note:
If you don't have access to credentials for connecting to your website files, contact your hosting provider for assistance. If you don’t have access to website files, you can backup your entire website then extract the wp-content folder from the backup.
- Onced signed in, locate your wp-content folder
- Export the wp-content folder to your desktop
How to export your database .sql file
You will need to find where your database is located and export it to your desktop as an .sql file. For example purposes we will use PhpMyAdmin.
To export your .sql file:
- Log in to your hosting provider account
- Connect your database via PhpMyAdmin
Note:
If you don’t have access to the credentials for connection, contact your hosting provider or make a full backup of your website and export the database from the backup.
- Once connected, find your database in the left column and click on it
Note:
You can find the name of your database in your wp-config file. The name will have the following format: define( 'DB_NAME', 'database_name_here' )
- At the top of the PhpMyAdmin page, click on the Export tab
- A page with this message will appear: Exporting tables from "name_your database name" database
- In the Format section, check that SQL is selected and click Go
An export of your database in .sql format to your desktop will start automatically.
How to create a zip file
You will need to upload both the wp-content folder and the database sql file together as one file. For this reason, you will need to create a zip file which has both the wp-content folder and the .sql file.
Important:
The wp-content folder and the .sql database file should be on the same level.
To create a zip file in Windows:
- Select your wp-content folder and the database .sql file
- Right click on the selected items
- Choose, Compress to Zip file
To create a zip file in Mac OS X
- Select your wp-content folder and the database .sql file
- Holding Control, click on the selected items
- Choose Compress “ Title of your folder”
How to migrate your website using the Migration Assistant
Once you have created a zip file of your website, you can proceed to migrate your website.
To start migration:
- Fill in the subdomain of your website
- Choose a data center and click Continue
- Fill in your subdomain and choose a datacenter
Note:
If automatic migration has failed, your subdomain and datacenter will be filled in with the information you previously provided.
Once the zip file of your website has been created, you can start the migration process by uploading the zip file.
Important:
You can upload only zip files. The zip files should not exceed 50GB.
To upload:
- Click on Choose a file
- Choose the zip file you have created and click Open
- Tick the box and agree to allow 10Web to check your files and folders for safety
- Click Proceed to start upload
Once your file has uploaded to 10Web, migration of your website will start automatically.
Important:
Reloading the page while the zip file is being uploaded will cancel the uploading process.
If in case the upload fails, you may try to upload your zip file again, or contact us via live chat.
Once the files have been successfully uploaded, website migration will commence.
You'll receive an email notification from us upon the completion of the migration. It’s essential to thoroughly check your newly migrated website to confirm that all data has been correctly and completely transferred.
