While 10Web offers various optimization tools, it doesn't include a built-in multilingual feature. However, you can use third-party plugins like Weglot, a powerful and user-friendly translation tool for WordPress. Weglot seamlessly translates your entire site—pages, posts, menus, and more—into 100+ languages, helping you reach a global audience. Here's how to use Weglot to make your site multilingual.
Step 1: Install and activate the Weglot plugin
- Login to Your WordPress Dashboard
- Navigate to Plugins > Add New
- In the sidebar, click on Plugins and then Add New
- Use the search bar to find the Weglot plugin.
- Install and activate
Step 2: Create a Weglot account and configure the plugin on WordPress
- Go to Weglot's website and sign up for an account.
- After signing up, you'll be taken to your Weglot dashboard.
- You'll need to create a new project and select your Website’s CMS (e.g., WordPress).
- Save changes.
Note:
In your Weglot dashboard, after setting up your project, you'll be given an API key. Copy this key to insert in your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to your WordPress Dashboard > Plugins > Weglot Settings
- Paste your API key into the relevant field and save the changes.
- Select your original language and the destination languages you want to translate into. Supported languages can be found here.
Step 3: Customize the language switcher
Weglot provides an automatic language switcher on your site, allowing visitors to easily toggle between languages. You can customize how this switcher appears on your website.
- Access the Language button design settings.
- Customize the appearance of the language switcher (e.g., position, button style, etc.) as per your needs. Weglot offers several options for the appearance of the language switcher:
Dropdown Menu: A compact dropdown for language selection.
Inline Flags: Display flags next to each language.
Custom HTML: For advanced users who want full control over the design. - Choose the position of the Switcher. Common placements include the header, footer, or as a floating widget on the side of the page.
- If you want to further style the language switcher to fit your website's theme, you can add custom CSS or adjust the HTML structure.
Step 4: Translate your content
Once the plugin is installed and the language switcher is configured, Weglot will begin translating your content automatically.
- Automatic Translation: Weglot uses machine learning and professional human translations to automatically translate your site’s content. This includes your pages, posts, menus, and other dynamic elements on your site.
- Review and Edit Translations: Although Weglot automatically translates your website, you can review and refine the translations in your Weglot dashboard. If you notice any inaccurate translations, you can manually adjust them to better match your desired tone and message.
- Custom Post Types and Fields: Weglot also supports custom post types, custom fields, and other advanced WordPress features. You can map and translate these elements directly from the Weglot dashboard.
Limitations of the free version of Weglot
While Weglot offers an excellent solution for translating your website into multiple languages, it's important to note that their free version comes with certain limitations. The free version is designed for small-scale use or testing, so if you need more features or support for larger websites, you may need to upgrade to one of their paid plans. Here are the key limitations of the free version:
- Limited Word Count: The free version of Weglot allows you to translate only 2,000 words. This limit applies to the entire website, including posts, pages, and other content. If your website exceeds this word count, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan to continue translating additional content.
- Support for One Language Pair: With the free version, you can only translate your website into one additional language apart from your default language. If you want to translate your site into more than one language, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan.
- Limited Access to Translation Dashboard: The free version does not provide full access to the Weglot translation dashboard, which means you won’t be able to manage and edit translations efficiently. With a paid plan, you get full access to all translations and can make necessary adjustments to improve the quality and accuracy of the content.
- No Priority Support: Weglot’s free plan does not come with priority customer support. If you encounter issues with the plugin, you’ll have access to the standard support channels, but you may experience longer wait times. Paid plans offer premium support with quicker response times and more direct assistance.
Note:
If you decide to translate your website manually, you will need to use a third-party plugin like Loco Translate to translate the text within the widgets (e.g., “ Read More ” on the Posts widget).
