Altering pagination buttons

At the bottom of every gallery for which pagination is in effect, there are the nav buttons:

I'd like very much to enlarge these, give them a transparent background (or perhaps replace them with small .png files).  However, after swimming through a lake of CSS, I'm not seeing clearly how to do so.  If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd be appreciative.

  You can change pagination style in the gallery themes.
