Feature request: Advanced or faceted tag search

Is there a way to display an advanced or faceted tag search that drills down to images matching all criteria? Rather than having users select multiple tags in a long drop-down list, I’d prefer tag boxes that display specific tags. I would also like my users to be able to select multiple tags in each box. I can imagine a few options:

The first option would be to show multiple tag boxes that are interconnected. For instance, selecting “fauna” in the first tag box would filter the results in the second box to “land animals”, “see animals” and “birds”. Selecting “see animals” would then result in “fish”, “jellyfish”, “micro-organisms”, etc. in the third tag box.

Another option would be to have multiple tag boxes, that each show a selected set of tags. One would display tags “January” through “December”, another would show animal types, like “cats” and “dogs”, and a third one would show tags like “male” or “female”.

A combination with another plugin that works properly with Photo Gallery, or a custom line of code, would also be a welcome solution.
