After purchasing a domain through 10Web, you might decide to host your website with a third-party provider. To do this, you can point your domain using either Nameserver (NS) or A records. This guide includes both methods for pointing the domain.
Note:
If you don’t have a domain name yet, you can follow this guide to purchase one.
Step 1: Locating domain and DNS settings
To locate your domain and DNS settings:
- In the 10Web Dashboard go to My Products > Domains.
- You will be automatically redirected to the Domains portfolio.
- Click on your domain name. You will be redirected to the Overview section.
- Select the DNS tab for pointing with A / CNAME record or select the Nameservers tab to point with nameservers.
Note:
You can locate the DNS using the three dots (more options) beside your domain data. Here, you can directly access the Manage DNS, Manage Nameservers and Manage Domain sections.
Step 2: Pointing a domain
There are two ways to point your domain: Nameservers or A record.
A record is used to link a domain name (e.g. example.com) to an IPv4 address.
Nameservers are the servers where all DNS records are managed. To manage your DNS records in the 10Web dashboard, you will need to point your domain using the 10Web nameservers.
Note:
It can take up to 24 hours for the newly added records to be resolved and changes to take effect. You can use DNS Checker to periodically check the status.
Option1: Pointing with Custom Nameservers
To point your domain with nameservers to your 3rd party-hosted website follow these steps:
- Navigate to the Nameservers section of your domain.
- Click on the Edit button.
- Choose Custom Nameserver.
- Enter the nameservers provided by your host. Typically, you will get 2 fields to add your custom nameservers, if you need more, click on + Add nameserver button.
- Save your changes.
Important:
After switching your nameservers to Custom nameservers, 10Web can no longer manage or update DNS records for you. Use the DNS management interface provided by your hosting company to add new records or edit existing ones.
Option 2: Pointing with A and CNAME Records
If you want to use 10Web nameservers, you can still point your domain to 3rd party hosting by just creating A and CNAME records.
For this, access the DNS section, found either through the domain's DNS tab or the more options menu next to your domain in the list.
Add an A record
- Click Add DNS Record > Add New
- Select A as the record type.
- Leave the Hostname field empty to apply this record to your root domain.
- In the IPv4 Address field, type the IP address of your hosting server.
- Leave the TTL as default unless you have a specific need to adjust it.
- Click Add Record.
Add a CNAME record for www redirection
- Click Add DNS Record and choose Add New from the dropdown list.
- Choose CNAME as the record type.
- For the Hostname field, enter www
- In the Server field, input your root domain (e.g., "domain.com").
- Leave the TTL as default unless you have a specific need to adjust it.
- Click Add Record.
Important:
You can point your domain using A record and CNAME only if you are using the Default nameservers provided by 10Web.
Note:
If your domain is successfully pointed but you encounter issues with your website, you need to reach out to your hosting provider for further assistance.
